THE FUTURE
OF NEWS:
- mainly online - online newspapers and blogs
- "traditional media outlets have to learn to tailor their products for consumers who demand instant, personalized information" (CBS NEWS)
- flip in control from news providers to consumers due to increase in internet and not TV news and newspaper activity: content is with you wherever you go AND you can access whatever content you want which gives you total control of what information you choose to listen to
- more news out there due to blogs
- "media futurists have predicted that by 2021, 'citizens will produce 50 percent of the news peer-to-peer'" (We Media)
- more participatory journalism [the act of citizens "playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information" (We Media)]
- conversation instead of lecture style stories- more open source journalism (stories with "open to anyone" sources)
- many people will have access to a lot of news quickly which means problems with authenticity might arise

Plus side:
- more people will be able to read more news- most online newspapers like the
http://www.startribune.com/ and http://www.cnn.com/ provide free news
- people can have a say in what news they want to get and what news they want to publish
- more news will be funded through many different services and access points
- there would be no chance of a monopoly

Down side:
- no one will buy newspapers anymore, even though they are the best source for authentic information
- people might not know what to believe with all the news that might not be news
- local TV stations and newspapers will have to struggle to keep up with national networks that have the resources to provide the most breaking news online
- people won't get the whole story, just what they want to read
- there will be a lot of different viewpoints
- the participatory journalism will raise a lot of credibility questions

Open source journalism is something that I find particularly interesting. Have you seen NewAssignment.net

It is one of a few organizations that are trying to figure out that model right now. I like the distinction you made an another place in the blog between a reading public and a reading audience. But how does one take a population which is used to being the audience and turn them into an active public?
